Mt. Hekla is one of the most popular mountains in Iceland. It is famous for its expansive and beautiful views from the top, sometimes seeing as far as the Vatnajökull glacier, but most people know this mountain for being the second most active volcano in Iceland. Mt. Hekla has erupted many times throughout history, most recently in 2000. For hundredes of years this mountain of fire was believed to be the gateway to hell and no one dared to climb it. It was not until the year 1750 that a brave man named Eggert Ólafsson, an Icelandic biologist, decided to throw caution to the wind and succeeded in reaching the summit. Since then hiking to the top of Mt. Hekla has become a very popular activity.
