Solheimajökull Glacier Experience

The tour starts with an introduction to the equipment and safety rules needed to explore the glacier. Then you will take a short walk across the pitch black volcanic ash and sands towards the frozen glacier tongue that is Sólheimajökull outlet glacier. As you walk along the valley which the glacier filled only a few years ago, your certified glacier guide will show you how the glacier is retreating at an alarming rate, almost before your very eyes.

Here is your chance to visit a glacier and not just any glacier. This trip will take you to the frozen glacial tongue that is Sólheimajökull (2 hours east of Reykjavik). It is a magnificent phenomenon, a rugged, raw and ever changing hub of ancient frozen water. You will explore the crevasse riddled outlet glacier with its amazing ice formations, sinkholes and jagged ridges. Along the way, you will find an ice wall on the glacier where you will be able to test your ice climbing skills.

For those looking for a shorter but stunning guided walk, this is a fantastic introduction to the unique world of glaciers. The Falljökull glacier tongue is quite unique in that it offers everything glaciers are best known for without the need to travel great distances. Crevasses, Jökladrýli (Dirt cones), glacier mice and Moulins. Suitable for the whole family (10 years and older), student groups and anyone with a basic fitness level (please note that the terrain is rocky and uneven and there are some uphill sections on the walk).
