What to wear:

  • Light long sleeves or t-shirts (preferably wool) next to the skin
  • A fleece or heavy wool garment
  • Waterproof windbreaker outer layer
  • Jeans and cotton clothing items are not recommended for our trips as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet
  • A waterproof shell layer is a must as very it's usually wet on the glacier
  • For the glacier hike, we also recommend using sunglasses and sunscreen even if it is cloudy due to the high UV and sunlight reflecting off of the glacier.
  • You will need good hiking boots with ankle support that fit crampons for the glacier hiking tour.
  • If you do not own a pair then we rent out good hiking boots as well as a waterproof raincoat and trousers.

Tour Description

About Iceland's Glaciers

Glaciers provide an amazing opportunity to experience the power and beauty of nature up close and personal. These beautiful, wild, and ever-changing phenomena hide countless unexplored secrets and natural curiosities. Besides taking you on adventures on the glaciers, our glacier experts love these ice masses so much that they often hike across them on their own. During that time, they are naturally curious and always on the lookout for safe new ice tunnels and fascinating sinkholes to share with the world.

One of our favorite, furry glacier guides, Bilbo the Samoyed Puppy, is always poking his nose out on the glacier. Recently he’s been sniffing out curious ice formations and new crevasses on Solheimajokull. Let Bilbo take you on an adventure!

About the Tour

This adventure provides you with the unique opportunity to combine the two of the most exciting Icelandic activities: glacier hiking and blue ice formations exploration. We’ll take you on a beautiful hike on the glacier and show you blue ice in moulins, sinkholes, crevasses, ice walls and ice tunnels.

The tour will start with a short safety briefing before we outfit you with all the glacier safety equipment you need. Your expert guide will tell you everything about the safety gear you’ll be using (crampons, harness, an ice ax, and a helmet) and all about the hike that awaits you.

Then your guide will take you carefully through this surreal icy landscape. Discover this vast ice landscape as you hike out across Solheimajokull, an outlet glacier that stretches out from Myrdalsjokull, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier.

Keep your eyes peeled for the glacier’s unique ice formations, its many ice ridges, ice walls and blue sinkholes. There will be plenty of photo stops along the way! Your guide will be there for you every step of the way, keeping you safe and telling you all about the geology of the area and the glacier.

After your eyes and your camera have had their fill with this icy natural beauty, you’ll return to the base camp.

Join us and we’ll take you to this secret blue wonderland!

You won’t need to study up on glaciers before you come. Your professional guide will tell you all about the glacier – its geology, formation, and age – while you are standing on the body of the ice mass itself. This is definitely better than any geology class in high school! The guide will also tell you about how climate change is currently and will continue to affect the fragile fields of ice in this island nation. You’ll learn a lot of interesting tidbits while crossing over the top of the glacier.

The rating for this glacier hike is moderate. That means it’s meant for those people at an average level of health and fitness. You’ll need to be able to walk with confidence on an uneven surface, do mild ascents and descents, and handle a bit of somewhat rough terrain. It takes about 3 hours to hike round trip, which equals 1.5 hours in each direction. No special skills or previous experience are necessary to take part in this adventure.
